2013:

http://articles.latimes.com/2013/mar/23/entertainment/la-et-ct-boomers-booming-at-box-office-20130322

Quote :
According to a study by the Motion Picture Assn. of America, the number of older frequent moviegoers -- people over the age of 40 who see a movie once a month or more -- was on the rise last year.

This finding could lead movie studios, production companies and film financiers to make more movies that cater to adult audiences.

According to the MPAA, last year there were 5.8 million people ages 40 to 49 who saw a film once a month or more, up significantly from 3.3 million in 2011.
The study also found that the number of frequent moviegoers ages 50 to 59 increased over the same period, to 3.3 million from 3.1 million. And those in the 60-and-up age group rose to 4.6 million from 4.1 million.

2014:

Quote :
Fewer younger moviegoers are hitting theaters to watch films, while older audiences are pouring in in record numbers, according to a new study from the Motion Picture Association of America.

In 2014, the share of tickets sold to 40-49 and 50-59 year olds hit all time highs, while the share of tickets sold to 60+ year olds hit its highest level since 2011.

Recent quote from Tarantino:

Quote :
"I think an adult audience is really rising up," said "Django Unchained" director Quentin Tarantino backstage at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood after winning the Oscar for best original screenplay. "That we're not [just] making movies for teenagers anymore is kind of cool."

Meanwhile, studies from MPAA have shown the biggest audiences that went for American Sniper were older audiences (the highest-grossing domestic film that year)

Considering studios are now planning more adult movies, it'd be interesting to see if the numbers will continue to rise or not. Who knows.

Kinda makes sense, since there have been a lot of successful rated-R films this year.
