Is Twisted Metal considered a shooter?

Right, I'm having an argument with one of my friends who's getting upset that I called Twisted Metal a shooter. I mean I know it's on cars and all, but there aren't any races. You just drive around and try to kill each other. He claims it's a "vehicular combat" game. Which sounds true but generally speaking isn't that still just a shooter?

Nope, Twisted Metal doesn't really fit into any genre if you think about it, but i'd say the closest one would be the fighting game genre

It definitely has some shooter aspects to it, there would be nothing wrong with calling it such.

It could be qualified as a shooter, but it's placed under the genre ''vehicular combat'' just like LBP is placed under ''Play.Create.Share.''

David Jaffe sees it more as a fighting game than a shooter.

Yeah but it has the same layout as any other TPS. It's got a short campaign and then online it's deathmatch and last man standing stuff.

I mean, you could call it a really fast-paced TPS, could you not?

Its a car combat kind of game. And not all cars will have guns.

I think one of the characters, a biker dude, is only equipped with two chainsaws. Again, not to sure though.

Oh, yeah, I figured he meant without any weapons whatsoever, but that makes sense.

Just because a game has some elements of a shooter, it doesn't mean it IS a shooter.

Game genres are defined by a game's most pronounced elements. Mass Effect is defined as an RPG despite it's combat, for example.
