- SCEA CEO Jack Tretton has said titles for PS4 will likely max out at the $60 mark.
Speaking with CNBC, Tretton said the new system will welcome all sorts of pay schemes ranging from free-to-play, and your normal disc price.
“I think people are willing to pay if they see value there and I think there’s more choice than ever before for consumers,” he said. “We’re going to welcome free-to-play models; games from 99 cents up to those $60 games.
“But if you really see where the heat is for the true gamer on the console it’s still that big-form experience that typically runs upwards of $50 million to develop and will justify that $60 price point and will give people hours and hours of gameplay on a daily basis for months and years to come.”
Tretton said he doesn’t expect tablet or mobile games to cut into PS4 game sales, as those are just “additive experiences,” and that the “true gamer wants to play the most powerful devices and the most deep and rich gaming experiences.”
PS4 is due out this holiday season.

| I'm really glad about this. I was really worrying about the prices of next gen, but the companies are not overstepping there bounds and I'm appreciative of that. | |

Me too. I was afraid that as consoles and games became more expensive to develop, companies would put that difference in cost on us by increasing price.

| $60 is still way to much for a game IMO. But oh well, it is what it is | |

According to Mark Rein and a few others, over time games will DECREASE in cost because the power of the consoles + new engines requires less people to programme. No worries about working with bottlenecks. Square Enix mentioned the same thing. There new engine will bring costs down. I'm loving the fact that Sony are opening up the system for indie devs also, self-publishing, going in a more dev friendly direction vis a vis, Steam.

| Australia has a higher cost of living. The highest RRP for video games is $109 AUD but a retail store has to be stupid to sell a video game at that price (Look what happen to GAME Australia) since gaming has become more mainstream and a competitive market compared to what it use to be 7-10 years back. Most stores will sell new releases at $79 at the lowest. When Battlefield 3, Star Craft and Halo Reach first came out, JB Hi-Fi were selling at the $60 mark. | |
