Undying Video Games Forum for People Who Like to Play Video Games
Subject: Underrated Games Mon Jun 18, 2012 7:13 am
With the recent introduction of the thread 'Top 15 Video Games of All Time' there was one game/series I wanted to list but I knew not many members here would of ever played them.
After recently buying a new gaming PC I decided to return to one of my all time favourite game series S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat are first person shooter/role playing games with survival horror elements that places you in the real life Chernobyl Exclusion Zone following the horrific aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster with slight alternate reality twists in the years following the disaster. At it's core the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series would appeal to FPS, RPG and even survival horror fans and while it does have some minor gameplay and storyline flaws, it does a brilliant job of creating an atmospheric, immersive and open ended game world.
The most similar games i've played to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series are probably Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, except overall the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series generally feels much darker. Also the game was also developed by a Ukrainian company called GSC Game World and I can't help but feel that this also gives the game a unique feel that sets it apart in comparrison to the endless amount of games developed in North America and Japan for example.
I would recommend this series to anyone who owns a decent PC or if your planning on getting one in the future. These games are available on Steam and they are very cheap with each installment costing £9.99, £7.99 and £12.99 respectively. Plus the modding community has come up with something called the Complete mod for all three games which vastly improve the graphics and visuals and also tweak some of the gameplay elements which add to the experience for anyone playing the game for the first time.

Instead of making this thread I always planned on telling everyone here to buy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 when it came out as it was going to be a multiplat, but it looks unlikely that it's ever going to be released now. Such a shame...

I actually remember STALKER as being an underrated cult classic. I'd pick it up but these type of genres aren't for me.

That's it really, if your not arsed about FPS or WRPG's then it would be wasted on you. However someone like Reaper I know would like these games as he loves Fallout New Vegas and the L85A1 Assualt Rifle is featured in every installment.

Drakengard. Best game I've ever played. The music, plot, and characters are just brilliant.
NieR. Probably the second best game I've ever played. Spiritual sequel to Drakengard, the music made me nostalgic. I can see why some people wouldn't like it, but it definitely didn't deserve the low ratings it received. RIP Cavia.
Lair. One of the biggest complaints people had about this game was 'controls lag,' which was an unjustifiable complaint. What people saw as lag was really just realism employed by the developer. One should ride a dragon before criticizing a game's portrayal of what riding a dragon would be like. The story wasn't all that great, but the gameplay reminded me of the days I spent on the back of a red dragon.

Absolutely quality game, not many people seem to have heard of it and fewer still played it. It's a beast, graphically it was the Killzone 2 of the PlayStation 1. The story is dark and gritty as hell, you start of joining the G-Police and get yourself posted to the hotspot Callisto (one of Jupiter's Moon's) for personal reasons and to seek answers. To begin with its regular police work, scanning suspicious cargo crates and vehicles and attempting to crack down on gang warfare who are somehow smuggling military grade weapons into the colony.
Soon enough though the paper trail leads to a conspiracy of greed and corruption and you find yourself in a full scale war desperately struggling to survive the onslaught.
The art style is very reminiscent of The Fifth Element and especially Blade Runner with the mood and tone set by the buildings and cars perfectly capturing a future you can believe in. Decrepit and dirty industrial and mining colonies exist alongside the more civilised residential and corporate domes.
The gameplay as i stated revolves around (in the early levels) cracking down on gang warfare and scanning targets and destroying them accordingly with the wide array of weapons your Havok Gunship carries. Other missions involve you having to protect targets from attack or recon mission to gather intelligence. The weapons range from cannons and lasers to guided missiles and 1000lbs bombs, you also sometimes get a wingman who you can command to attack targets or cover your back.
The soundtrack is one of the best IMO, a gritty and dirty drum n bass, electronic and atmospheric themes are apparent and they compliment the enviroments very well. Here are some examples below.
I have begun a playthrough for the game on my youtube channel if anyone is interested, i have used my HD PVR to get the highest quality although naturally it being an old game it is not going to look super fantastic compared to recent titles. Here is part 1 which includes the several minute long intro which gives the backstory and introduces the main characters.

Twinsen's Odyssey.
I don't care what assumptions you form from a few screenshots. Ultimately this game had unprecendented gameplay for its time, pretty damn good 3D graphics, an intriguing and varied open world, dynamic gameplay, a phenomenal soundtrack, gripping narrative, likeable characters, voice acting (wasn't great but not many games had decent voice acting at the time and it did give the characters a personality) and so much emotion!
Whether you're training in the school of magic, driving your car, exploring the moon (or other planets), fighting enemies, talking to people, messing around in an amusement park, chilling in the casino, beating up random people, doing side quests or just sticking to the storyline it's a bloody incredible game like no other.
Damn the world was so detailed, intricate and exciting to explore. There's such a unique setting and really unique, memorable characters. There are cheesy aspects but that's just part of the charm. It's one of the greatest action/ adventure games ever made and at times it feels like an rpg because of its depth!

Magic Pengel. A fun RPG, albeit a bit primitive in its combat, but I love the watercolor art style and the ability to create whatever the hell kinda monsters you want.
War of the Monsters. Awesome fighting game with a cool cheesy monster-movie aesthetic and great creature designs.
