Gears story from what I've heard is good, but lacks depth and awareness that other games this gen have.

Well yea it's a shooter...Gears has a deeper story than Halo or COD and arguably even Uncharted (think about it..if it wasn't for the awesome characters the dry plot would stick out like a sore thumb). It has to have a deep enough plot but at the same time they can't make it like Metal Gear Solid where the plot is so complicated that they have to make 30+ minute cutscenes...So yea.
The depth is there...Don't know what you mean by awareness though.

Only Metal Gear/Solid game I can remember that had 20+ minute cutscenes is MGS4.
Anyway, I don't know if it's deeper than Halo's, but the story certainly isn't terrible.

I timed one at 50 + mins, it can get ridiculous at times.
