The Empire Strikes Back was dark, but The Force Awakens is just filled with tragedies. Han Solo gets killed by his own son and billions of people die. Sure lots of people die in the previous Star Wars movies as well, but really think about it. Leia lost her mother and father, hasn't seen Luke in many years, and now she loses her husband and son. Also while we may have seen the Death Star destroy a planet in A New Hope, they fucking destroy 4 planets at the same time in The Force Awakens. Worst part is, you actually see the reactions of people right before they are about to die. Like Jesus Christ! I can't imagine things getting any darker.
- Spoiler:
Those are nothing new though. Han Solo dying by the hands of Kylo Ren is a retread of Darth Vader killing Obi-Wan at the end of A New Hope. 4 planets get destroyed, people have reactions of terror and despair in them. So what? They weren't really relevant to the plot at any point. Alderaan, Princess Leia's fucking home planet, gets blown up by the Death Star in a New Hope. This was the first time we saw the might and will of the Empire, as they stroke fear into those who opposed them. This was a prime example to tell the Rebels to not fuck with the Empire! The 4 planets that were destroyed were random planets that really had no correlation with the story of the current struggle of the Resistance of the Empire. They didn't even explain who or what those planets were. I'd argue that Episode 4 and 5 were darker than Episode 7. Episode 4 certainly had a better grand scale of adventure that Episode 7 did, that's for sure. Episode 5 had the shocking revelation that Darth Vader IS Luke's father! It was dark in tone and atmosphere. Plus, with Han Solo being captured and frozen in carbonite at the end, and Luke failing to defeat Vader, it feels as if the Empire had just defeated the Rebels and take over the Galaxy. Even if Episode 7 has some dark moments, it's really nothing we've seen before, and it can't compare to Episode 5.
Plus, Kylo Ren is just less intimidating compared to Darth Vader, let's be brutally honest. He is basically a lamer Vader copy.

That's why I mentioned Leia's family tragedies. Last time I checked, Obi-Wan isn't Vader's father. Are you going to sit there and tell me that a father being killed by his own son isn't darker? GTFO! Also are you serious? Destroying one planet is darker than destroying 4 highly populated planets? Better grand scale of adventure? In what sense? Who cares if Han Solo was captured and frozen in Empire? He actually DIES in The Force Awakens, lol. It's not "death" itself that makes it darker, but the impact that it creates. Ask yourself, do you really think Leia is going to go back living happily ever after knowing the fact that her family is now destroyed? And Leia isn't just some character either, She's like one of the most popular characters in the franchise.

| You know, I've yet to rewatch the the previous films, but I feel like The Force Awakens sits right in between the 6. | |

| I can't make up my mind whether The Force Awakens is better than Return of the Jedi or not? I really need to see film a couple of more times. Because I feel like The Force Awakens has a more consistent tone than Return of the Jedi. Plus The Force Awakens just has more to offer as film. It's able to focus on the old and new generation of characters, while making you love both in just a few minutes. Also the film has a better sense of adventure, while also having those shit gets real moments at the same time. | |
