Xbox Live Is Killing Single-Player

This is just a theory but I think that Xbox Live can be blamed for the decline of single-player campaigns.

Why?

You have to pay to play online. Do you think that a customer will be happy after he just bought a Xbox Live Gold subscription and then the only game he has is Enslaved?

Doesn't seem to be killing games like Mass Effect or Fallout.

I think it's online in general that's killing single-player experiences. I don't know anyone who says, "I just bought Gold. Better make the most of it by only playing multiplayer games." If you play a game like Mass Effect and talk with your friends in a Party Chat, you're taking advantage of the service.

However, good single-player experiences are less common these days because of online on the consoles, whether it be PSN or XBL. Devs are cutting effort put towards their single-player in an attempt to simulate longevity with a tacked-on multiplayer.

I agree with TRF. However there are still great singleplayer games.

TRF hit the nail on the head. Xbox Live isn't the sole reason. The saturation of online games is. Even though I despise Bethesda and am not looking forward to Skyrim, their consensus on making singleplayer experiences is commendable. That said I don't blame devs for sacrificing singleplayer for better multiplayer. $60 for a game isn't cheap and gamers don't want to spend that much on a 6 hours singleplayer experience with no replay value.

Even Killzone now has splitscreen and UC3 is rumored to have it.

Yes, but it's a lot less prevalent now. I think it's only due to huge consumer demand that it's starting to make a comeback.

I agree to this theory to some extent. You don't have to pay for XBL if you bought a single player game. Just cancel the subscription and when you buy a game with multiplayer, then reactivate the subscription. But some people don't like going through this hassle. So they either just pay for XBL, or not at all.

I usually buy multiplayer games now a days, but not because I'm paying for XBL. Hell I wouldn't buy a single-player only game even on the Wii. Games with online multiplayer simply have much more replay value, and replay value=bang for buck.

If single-player only games were 40 bucks from the get go, I think I'd buy them more.
