The point of HATRED is to run around and kill people. Everyone's flipping out, obviously.
Personally, I find the reactions just show how people are focused on the wrong things. Instead of obsessing over games being violent, they should pay more attention to mental issues, criminal admiration, and other real causes for irl violence.

The developers are smart. This was intentional so that the game could get a lot of attention.

They definitely did a good job getting free advertising in the West, but I'd be worried about it becoming too taboo. We've seen this happen before (with RapeLay), where a game becomes very well known, but taboo, so instead of getting any sales it just becomes the #1 torrent on ThePirateBay.

I feel like this game will end up hurting the gaming industry. I can just see a bunch of politicians using it as a prime example on why they should pass legislation against games.
I doubt it. ESRB would never approve it.

There have been movies and movies that are just as violent and people seem to be okay with that. I can see people already screaming out the "VIDEO GAMES ARE INTERACTIVE" argument to automatically counter any opposing argument.
I find it funny when people want video games to be considered an art form but won't allowing anything that might be deemed distasteful to their standards. Personal feelings, moral values and merits are irrelevant because that is the first step to insult an art form.

The daily news is more violent than most video games anyways.

You're forgetting that most of those movies were fired with controversy, too.

When you compare it to A Clockwork Orange's initial reception, then yes.
You guys seem to think movies are never hated on. When, in fact, cinema has been under huge fire back in the 80s, 70s, 60s, etc.

It's true. QT is always getting shit for the amount of violence in his films. Which is funny, because there are lot more violent films out there.

You only need ESRB approval if you are going to sell physical copies.

It's already taboo, even if they manage to be allowed to sell it, it'll probably be another one of those controversial games that no one would admit to owning.
