All the best games this gen were Japanese, with a few exceptions.

Dark Souls is shit compared to Demon's Souls. The story is uber accessible, the PvP is broken to shit, and they completely dropped the themes of solitude and despair. The only real redeeming aspects are Quelaag's Sister and Iron Tarkus (though he's OP).
