There is preference in everything, yes.

But "best albums" is an objective title. If he said "favourite albums" that is another thing.
He needs to keep an open mind about musical quality, rather than just simply what he enjoys. Sooo stuff like Ne Obliviscaris is perhaps the best of the year regardless of whether it's to any of our tastes, because the songwriting is varied, composition is incredible, it's technical, diverse and powerful and beautiful. So yeah. I'd give it number 1, he gave it 2.
