WTF Math!?

Before anyone says anything, yes, I know how to do fractions. And even though its annoying at times, its still pretty fucking easy. However, I was taking a little practice test to see if I remembered anything I did when I was a kid in school. And even though I remembered, I'm having problems solving this certain question. It's bullshit! I'm doing everything all my teachers told me to do, and I'm still getting the answers wrong. WTF!?

So can you guys try to solve this...

I'm not asking how to solve it, I already know how to, but I just want to make sure it isn't just me.

Well you have to turn them both into improper fractions, so 2 3/4 becomes 11/4 and 1 5/8 becomes 13/8.

Now you have to change them into similar fractions by multiplying the top and bottom numbers of 11/4 by two, giving you 22/8.

Add 13/8 and 22/8 and you get 35/8 or 4 3/8.

I was confused because you don't have to do that with other mixed fraction problems. Which is bullshit! This is probably why I like algebra a bit more because once you know it, you know it. Where as fractions, there are different ways of solving the question, which gets confusing some times.

It's not like I don't know it. I just forgot. It only takes me like less than a minute or two to remember how to do it again.

Admittedly, I think I've lost the ability to do long division on paper. I'm so used to just punching it into a calculator because all the math I do now is calculus and trigonometry and I don't have time to write out the process of division.

Yeah, I was good at long division when I was in the 4th grade, but then I forgot it many years later. But now I remember how to do it without a calculator.
