- It's been an exciting year for superhero video games. 2014 saw the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in April, the sequel to Disney Infinity in September and the third LEGO Batman game in November. Of these, Spider-Man's latest movie tie-in sold the worst and LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham sold the best.
Selling the least of any other superhero video game released in 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sold a lackluster 1.05 million copies. The game itself might not be amazing but the fact it sold marginally less than the last console Spider-Man game, 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man (3.03 million) is. Meanwhile, Disney Infinty: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) sold 2.35 million units - about half the 4.31 million copies the original Disney Infinity made though that game has been on shelves longer than its sequel has. And true to its name, LEGO Batman 3 blasted off beyond most of these numbers and has so far churned out 2.47 million units. The first installment, LEGO Batman: The Video Game (2008) sold an amazing 13.09 million copies (it's one of the best-selling LEGO games of all time!) but the 2012 sequel, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes only got 5.76 million. At this point, it's very unlikely any of these will outsell the first LEGO Batman but LEGO Batman 3 beating LEGO Batman 2? We'll just have to wait and see. Breaking it down, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sold the highest amount on PlayStation 4 (360,000), Disney Infinity 2.0 scored the most on Xbox 360 (710,000) and LEGO Batman 3 also sold most on PS4 (570,000). As for the lowest numbers, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sold the least on PC (100,000), Disney Infinity 2.0 sold fewest on Xbox One (240,000) and LEGO Batman 3 sold its fewest on PC as well (60,000). What's impressive about the total unit sales is how LEGO Batman 3 made the most - despite being the last game to hit stores! Sales will only increase in the following months but unless any of the two pick up, LEGO Batman remains in the lead. But even so The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was disappoitning, it didn't do Deadpool numbers (700,000 thousand units total). Activison has to rethink its Spider-Man property if it wants the brand to become a best-seller like Spider-Man 2 (7.62 million copies sold!). The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) and LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham are in stores now. Source: Comic Book Movie | |
