2001: A Space Odyssey vs. Star Wars

They're both great but 2001 wins out by a mile.

I have a feeling Mecha only made this thread because Shrute prefers 2001. 

The films are so different it's not even funny. It reminds me of the "Affleck vs Nolan" thread.

Well I mean, I didn't think there was anyone here that prefers 2001 over Star Wars, so I never bothered making a thread like this. Especially considering Jack just started watching 2001 recently, yet he already thinks it's better than Star Wars.

I watched it like a year ago and have seen it again since, Mecha. What do you mean that I just started watching? It's not a TV show, lol.

I think you're forgetting about how great Gone Prestige Gone was, and the script that he wrote for Good Will Insomnia starring Robin Williams, that was just fantastic.

Star Wars clearly has better SFX, score, and characters.

The visual effects in 2001 were far more groundbreaking. The score is debatable, I don't think either score is absolutely mindblowing but I will say that 2001's is FAR less hokey, and as for characters, I don't think any villain can beat HAL 9000, not even Darth Vader.

2001 was far more intelligent, clever, smart and meaningful than Star Wars. 

That said, Star Wars is great as well. But they're completely different, so this thread is just another pointless Mecha thread, at the end of the day.

lol, nope. The SFX were far more groundbreaking in Star Wars. Even the wide variety of aliens looked amazing. While in 2001, you can obviously tell that the apes were just guys in costumes. Also hokey? The score in Star Wars was more consistent and actually fit with the tone of the film. As for HAL being a better character than Darth Vader, HA! Darth Vader is listed at #3 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains. While HAL is at #13.
