Newest entry in my top list is Madoka, because it totaly surprised me.
Wasn't going to watch it at first ,because if you only know the official trailer or the first 2 eps, you only get to see a sailor moon like over-the-top happy story. But turns out they made it seem like that on purpose, so they can add dramatic turning points in and after ep 3. Looking back i should have seen it coming. it was so super happy and colourfull, that something horrible was bound to happen.
Very sad and tragic story, with a very unique visual style for the fights. Best fighting scenes i know so far, and they arent even the main focus of the anime.

Last post was more than a month ago, so i hope it doesn't matter if i double post.

I have to add Steins Gate and recommend it to everyone. At the first episodes it doesn't seem like much, but its so fucking awesome and keeps getting better and better.

It starts out with a pretty light hearted atmosphere with plenty of nerd jokes (all your base are belong to us e.g.) and sets everything up in great detail, so it can pull of the very emotional and awesome second half.
And even though its complex and deals with sending messages back in time to change the present, it never gets to confusing and is much easier to understand than Higurashi, Garden of Sinners or the last Death Note episodes.
And it gets soooooo sad at some points.
Dont know how i can get people to watch it, but its one of the best things ive ever seen.
