My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy Empty
PostSubject: My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy   My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy I_icon_minitimeFri Jan 25, 2013 11:19 am

Okay, so yesterday I finished Mass Effect 3 along with all available DLC. I've played all single-player DLC for the entire trilogy with the exception of Pinnacle Station for the first game since that DLC isn't available on PS3 (heard it sucked anyway).

So the first game definitely has the best RPG elements. I liked collecting gear and stuff. By far, Mass Effect has the most fleshed-out world and the most in-depth inventory system. Unfortunately, the combat is quite stiff and the cover system is balls. The first time I played through the game, I liked the use of heating instead of ammo; I just finished the game a second time this morning and now I think I prefer the ammo of the sequels.

On my first playthrough, I was a Paragon Soldier. Generic Shepard face, generic Shepard details, and generic Shepard name (John). I played the game how I assume BioWare wanted me to (as a good soldier). I saved Kaiden instead of Ashley cuz she's a bitch and since I was already a Soldier, I didn't need that extra combat experience as much as I needed biotic and tech abilities (Wrex and Kirrahe also survived Virmire). I let the Rachni queen go cuz why the hell not? I figure if she's honest with me and helps, that's great (and she does), and if she's not honest then I can just smack a bitch. Finally, I saved the Council cuz I'm a good boy and don't hold grudges (though throughout the series the Council legitimately pissed me off) and nominated Anderson because Udina is a cock. Oh, and I romanced Liara cuz again, Ashley is a bitch. Plus, as the prolific The_Biotic_God (aka Alan Muhammad Allah) told me on Facebook, "Why would you go into space just to have sex with a human?"

So for the second game, I imported my character and kept everything the way it was (class, appearance, etc.). The combat is so much better, and while the ammo system took me a little while to get used to, I prefer it now. One thing that bothered me was that all of the text was smaller. In the first game, the subtitles and menu text was nice and big; my eyesight is awful so for the second and third games, I had to squint 90% of the time. Miranda's got a phat booty that I would've loved to go spelunking in, but being the Paragon that I am, I romanced Liara again after we killed the Shadow Broker. Jack tried to get in bed with me but I told her to fuck off. I wish there was a way to let her down easy, but my two dialogue options were "Let me cheat on Liara" or "Fuck off, I hate you." I did all of the loyalty missions, my favorite being Kasumi's. I love pulling off smooth heists (wish there was a game like that). The moral interrupts are really cool too. Aria T'Loak is a badass and I love her. The suicide mission was great and I managed to get everyone out alive; Kasumi went in the vents, Miranda was team leader both times, Mordin escorted the crew back to the Normandy, Samara powered the biotic barrier, and both Samara and Jack went with me to destroy that giant T-800 (an acceptable but unremarkable boss fight). Finally, I destroyed the Collector Base cuz fuck the police. I also played Arrival which was a good bit of fun. By the way, scanning for minerals is annoying as fuck.

The third game is my favorite in the series. The combat is even smoother and the story is that much more urgent. Mordin's death really hit me where it hurts (the balls) but it also hurt my heart. I love Thane and his death was really sad too. Legion's death was mildly sad. I don't think he had enough time to develop to the point where I'd really be hurt by his death. From Ashes is way overpriced but Javik is so cool. Omega is a lot of fun though sometimes tedious. I do like the feeling of isolation though, since you're not working with your team. Almost feels like you'd come back to them all like, "I just had the craziest day ugaiz." Leviathan is really cool though it doesn't have as much of an impact on the story as I'd hoped. I boned Liara again; she definitely got breast implants or something. Guess that new Shadow Broker salary is lofty. I reunited all the races, cured the genophage, and destroyed the Reapers. My EMS was high enough so I saw Shepard gasp for air at the end. That was nice. Kinda really fucking stupid that the Catalyst is a kid. I also don't like the weight system for weapons.

tl;dr - I loved the series and, in my opinion, they improved with each one.

Also what is it with all of the important story aspects beginning with a 'C'? Cipher, Conduit, Citadel, Collector base, Cerberus, Crucible, Catalyst.

DAMN Jack. How long did it take you to finish everything?

Also I basically did everything you did. I just can't bring my self to play renegade cause all the characters are so well done it hurts me to watch my shep being harsh on them. Plus, almost all the big decisions throughout the game are pro paragon. Renegade decisions come to bite you in the ass or don't help much. What I did was that I romanced Tali, (picked the covered up girl like a true arab), saved Kaidan, Wrex, Kirrahe, let the Rachni Queen go, saved the council, rewrote the Geth heretics, saved all my teamates in the suicide mission (Garrus as team leader 1 and 2, Samara as biotic, legion as tech, and took miranda and thane with me to fight the proto human-reaper). In ME3 I cured the genophage, made peace between geth and quarians, and picked synthesis. I played ME2 about 3 times and ME3 3 times as well so my choices varied but were always underlyingly paragon. The only DLC's I played were Overlord and Shadow Broker.

I would say my favorite game in the series would have ME2, followed closely by ME3 (I try not to hard to think about the endings cause hey, ignorance is bliss right?) and then ME1 (nice rpg elements but the combat was just god damn terrible so it really made me dislike playing through the game).

BTW, welcome to the mass effect fan club of G7.

I beat all three in a matter of weeks. I seriously no-lifed it. When I wasn't playing it, I was thinking about playing it, and to me, that's how I know when I love a video game. Then as soon as I finished ME3 (yesterday), I restarted ME1 and finished that this morning; without side missions, ME1 is actually really freaking short.

Best WRPG series ever? It's up there.

PostSubject: Re: My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy   My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy I_icon_minitimeFri Jan 25, 2013 2:25 pm

I agree with some of what TRF said above here. ^^^^^^^^

I ABSOLUTELY love the Mass Effect series. All three games are awesome, the characters and dialogue choices for the games are fantastic, the story is well-written, and the gameplay is awesome. Mass Effect 2 is easily my favorite of the trilogy, followed by ME3, and ME1. I ALWAYS have played on paragon. I love the thought of being a lone hero, who has the fate of humanity and all of existance in my hands. Bioware are incredible developers for developing this series.

Mass Effect 1 is an awesome game, but it is just way too short when you skip the side missions. The mako missions are awful, btw. Combat is also kinda clunky, and some rpg elements are just annoying. It's just so fucking annoying having to change guns and abilities with every character in your squad. Very buggy as well. Hell, for some reason I didn't even get to romance anybody in my playthrough. Odd. :areyoufuckingk Let's be honest here, ME2 and ME3 blow the first game out of the water. Btw, I saved the council, saved the rachni, let ashley die, and played on soldier.

ME2 had perfect pacing to the game. The ending is great, and I love how you can decide the fate of your squad. The suicide mission is awesome. Easily one of the best games I have ever played. Miranda is so fucking hot My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy 409191096, and I banged her every time I played through it.
Omega is also great. The Citadel is the only complaint, it is so small and it sucks. Much better in the first and third games. I played all of the DLC's except for arrival. ( I don't give a shit about the batarians, and I already know what happens.)

ME3 had an epic opening and the first few missions were great. I like how it shows the coming together of all the races and the journey to get them to unite. The rpg elements are almost non-existant, but at this point of the trilogy who really cares? Sure, some of the endings suck. Thank God Bioware released FREE DLC in response to criticism by the fans. My only problem with this game is the multiplayer. It is so damn repetitive and boring to play. I hated the fact that we had to play it to get the best ending to me3. THANK GOD AGAIN for the extended-cut dlc, reducing the number of war assets needed to get the best ending. By the end of the game, Liara and my Shepard had developed a very strong relationship. I romanced her again. (This is before I played ME1, so I was using the comic backstory as me1 at the time. I romanced her in the comic.) I also killed the rachni. I really like the introduction of Javik, and the prothean backstory in the game. Leviathan is pretty good, and Omega DLC is also pretty good. (DON'T FUCK WITH ARIA) Can't wait for the grand Finale DLC that Bioware was hyping about a month ago. Also, FUCK EA for messing with this game and fuck the day 1 DLC crap. :fuckthat:

I need to replay me2 and me3 on different classes. The graphics for all three games get better as well. Very pretty, even on consoles.

Bottom line, the Mass Effect Trilogy is awesome, and I can't wait for Mass Effect 4. :fuckyea:
The people at Bioware are fucking geniuses.

I actually forgot to mention the Mako. The controls are abysmal. But I think even worse is the Hammerhead from ME2 (Overlord and Project Firewalker DLC). Thankfully the vanilla ME2 and ME3 don't have those vehicles, and even in Overlord it's only a small part. Firewalker can suck my cock though.

The Firewalker DLC gave me cancer. Also, I think when I finish my playthrough as a Renegade Vanguard, I'll play as an Engineer and I'll try to avoid morality as much as possible. I'm gonna do all three games putting zero work into Charm or Intimidate, using zero interrupts, and always going for neutral dialogue options. When left with an inescapable moral choice, I'll just flip a coin. Razz

In a matter of weeks? I can understand beating mass effect 1 fast, but mass effect 2 alone took me a matter of weeks, and ME3 about a week and a half. Plus you played all the dlc's which combined togather is basically a whole nother game. You cray cray brah.

And to answer you question, it's definitely my favorite WRPG series ever. Hit me up in ME3 multiplayer.

PostSubject: Re: My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy   My Thoughts on the Mass Effect Trilogy I_icon_minitimeTue Feb 19, 2013 9:08 pm

So I finished my second playthrough of the trilogy as a Vanguard FemShep. The biotics in the first game are meh; you don't really feel like a badass till the second game. I used Reave and Shockwave mainly in the second game, but they got gimped in the third game so I switched to Flare and Pull (in both games I used Biotic Dash or whatever that tackle power was called).

I kept Wrex alive in Virmire, let Kaiden die (as well as Kirrahe), killed the Rachni queen, let the Council die, nominated Udina to the new human Council in ME1. I kept everyone alive in ME2, but turned Legion's body over to Cerberus (so I never had him as a squadmate to begin with) and preserved the Collector Base. In ME3, I romanced Samantha Traynor (my only romance in the whole trilogy), faked the genophage cure (I had to murder Mordin and later Wrex when he found out, plus Eve died on the mission), and told the geth to fuck off before finally choosing to control the Reapers at the end.

One thing I noticed, to the trilogy's fault, is that there's definitely an advantage to playing as a Paragon. It was significantly more difficult for me to meet the 3100 EMS rating as a Renegade, whereas with a Paragon character, I achieved that minimum without even trying. So yeah, there's a lot of choice and I eventually did meet the minimum by scanning planets for assets, but there definitely exists a certain way BioWare WANTS you to play it. Not a "make or break" deal, but something I observed. Oh, and I did the Leviathan DLC but it kinda bugs me that you get this incredibly badass ally yet he only appears as a regular asset. Being able to control Reapers en masse would probably win the war for the organics. But no, it's just a number.

And I dunno why, but the ending really pissed me off the second time around. I didn't loathe it the first time, but it really betrays everything the trilogy stands for. You could play the games a million different ways with every combination of choices you could think of and you'd still be left with the same four options at the end.

Overall though, it's still my favorite new franchise of this generation and one of my favorite RPG franchises, period.

I just played the Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC. Definitely the best DLC of the whole trilogy. The villain reveal was kinda silly but there's so much great dialogue that I don't mind it going into sci-fi camp at times. I really like that it wasn't simply a mission that you can take, but that there's an engaging story where you see Shepard caught off-guard. I guess my biggest complaint is that I was under the impression that you'd be fighting alongside old allies, and they're in the DLC, at a party you can throw at the end of the DLC (optional), but the only old ally you get to fight alongside is Wrex. I certainly did not squander that opportunity.

I'm saving the party for later in the game but the rest of the DLC content is a top-notch. I really like all of the other DLC packs, but I wish they were as good as Citadel, which feels like an expansion as opposed to just a handful of missions like the others did. Anyway, it's a great send-off to the series.

That bit where they need to break into the ship at the end and the camera just holds on them for like fifteen seconds before she turns on the toothbrush . . . ah, so funny. And that chess match with the asari. So good. I think my favorite bit of the DLC however, aside from maybe Garrus asking if anyone missed the conversations they used to have in the elevators, is when Shepard and Javik end up on the set of the new Blasto movie and meet the actor. Too funny.
